What is Junior Bible Quiz?JBQ is an opportunity to teach the Word of God to primary-aged children. JBQ provides a framework of Facts, Fun, Fellowship, and Faithfulness. JBQ provides healthy competition to motivate quizzers to learn.
Quizzers are 1st through 6th graders. When you are recruiting you want to recruit the 3rd through 5th graders. Some 1st and 2nd graders find it hard to sit still through a match; some 1st and 2nd graders can do well. 6th graders have a choice to participate in JBQ with elementary school students or in Teen Bible Quiz with middle school students.
In 2006 there were over 1,650 JBQ teams and over 7,600 quizzers in the US.
How do I start a team?Get a copy of the question set--either in the Fact Pak Cards, or in a booklet. Get a copy of the Official Guidelines. Get together a group of 1st - 6th Graders. Begin studying the 10-point questions. Contact your district JBQ Coordinator for quiz schedule. Registration is usually due in August.
Some existing teams teach first year quizzers the 10-point questions, and add the 20- and 30-point questions in their 2nd and 3rd years. This depends on the quizzer's ability and motivation.
Check out other suggestions in the Coach's Manual that can be purchased from Gospel Publishing House.
Contact the District or your League Coordinator for suggestions.
Is there a difference between Georgia JBQ and other districts?Georgia uses the Official JBQ
Guidelines, published by Gospel Publishing House. There
are four league quizzes per year; each covers a new set
of the questions (including any previous questions). The
District Finals are held in March, quizzing the entire
question set.
Georgia JBQ introduced only using the 10 and 20 point questions for the B League, to reduce the amount of material for the younger and/or newer teams. Not all districts have a B league. Georgia JBQ re-ordered question sets so that the questions for each league match would be in a specified subject area, instead of being the next numerical sequence from the Fact Pak. By grouping the questions by subject matter it will be easier to teach the material to the quizzers. This format has been successful and will continue for the foreseeable future.
What happens after District Finals? The top four A league teams at District Finals qualify for the Southeast Regional tournament. The top A league team at District Finals qualifies for the National JBQ Festival. An additional five teams at the Regional Meet will also qualify for Nationals.
How do you break ties?TIE GAMES - The Guidelines give
instructions for handling tie games. There are three
overtime questions--one 10-point, one 20-point, and one
30-point question, in random order. If there is still a
tie, the teams answer 20-point questions until someone
scores (a.k.a., sudden death).
TEAM STANDINGS - Team Placement is determined by win-loss record. Ties are broken head-to-head competition first, then by total points.
Are the quizzers recognized for their achievements?Absolutely, YES! They are recognized on several levels.
QUIZZER RIBBONS - At each quiz meet, top quizzers will receive ribbons, based on total points in each league. Ties are not broken.
QUIZ OUT BADGES - If a quizzer "quizzes out" (A League-gets 6 correct answers during a quiz round, B League -gets 5 correct answers during a quiz round), he earns 10 bonus points for his team. We provide a badge to every quizzer who quizzes out and they earn a sticker for each time they quiz out.
QUIZZER TROPHIES - At District Finals, the top 10 quizzers for that meet will receive trophies: 1st - 10th place quizzers (by total points) in each league. Ties are not broken.
TEAM PLAQUES - At District Finals, all teams will receive plaques. Team Placement is determined by win-loss record. Ties are broken head-to-head competition first, then by total points.
What is the Bible Master Award program? We have a diverse group of students who participate in JBQ. Some quizzers will study and learn the questions, but may not score high enough in an actual quiz meet to receive ribbons or other recognition. The Bible Master Award program is designed to reward those quizzers that learn the material. Below are the requirements for each Seal
Certificate and Discoverer Seal - A
child must correctly answer 20 out of 30 of the
questions on the red cards (10 point).
Searcher
Seal - Based on 50 questions, a child must correctly
answer 25 out of 30 red cards (10 points) and 15 out of
20 blue cards (20 point) questions.
Achiever
Seal - Based on 60 questions, a child must correctly
answer 28 out of 30 red cards (10 points), 18 out of 20
blue cards (20 points), and 6 out of 10 purple cards (30
point) questions.
Master Seal - A child must
correctly answer 59 out of 60 of the total cards. These
are to be drawn at random from the entirety of the cards
mixed together 30 red (10 points), 20 blue (20 points),
and 10 purple (30 point).
Certificates - Coaches
quiz their students on one of four levels. The student
will earn a certificate and seal stickers that can be
purchased from Gospel Publishing House.
Ribbons- at district finals, we will award all quizzers that meet the requirement for the discoverer, searcher, and achiever as long as the coordinator receives the information by the deadline
Seal Pins-
In addition to the seal stickers, you can award them a
wearable Seal Pin. The seal pins can be purchased from
Gospel Publishing House or Craig Johnson.
Master Seal- the District will purchase the seal pin and present it to the quizzer at district finals. The church/coach is responsible to inform the JBQ National office of the achievement so that a letter and final seal can be presented.
Can our church a meet?If you wish to host a meet contact your league coordinator as soon as the leagues are determined. If you wish to host the first league meet contact the District coordinator.
What is the difference between the A league and B league? The B league is for the "new" quizzers. The B league covers only 10 and 20 point questions. The B league quizzer "quiz-out" is after answering 5 questions correctly. The B league has 7 20 point questions and 13 10 point questions.
The A league is for the experience quizzer but a new quizzer can quiz in the A league. The A league covers all 10, 20 and 30 point during the season. The A league quizzer "quiz-out" is after answering 6 questions correctly. The A league has 3 30-point questions, 7 20-point questions and 10 10-point questions.
Is there a limit to how many teams one church can have? There is no limit. We have had churches with four or more active teams. A church can have up to 8 quizzers per team. We recommend though that you limit your team size during league play to 3-5 quizzers per team to maximize the "table time" for each quizzer.
How is the leagues divided? The B league is divided geographically except for those churches who also have an A league team. All the churches' team will quiz at the same place unless that church has asked for an exception. When we have enough A league teams participating the A league will also be divided geographically and their B league teams will travel with the A league team.
Who can attend District finals?Currently all teams that participate in league matches can attend District finals. In the future we may need to limit the number of teams if we can not find a church large enough to host district finals if all teams attend. If we need to limit the number of teams the qualifications to attend district finals will be announced by your league coordinator in January.
You are allowed to combine teams at District finals. The quizzer averages of the team members may determine how the team is "seated" in the district finals division
What time does a Quiz Meet start? The time is set by the quiz coordinator. But usually registration is at 9:30am with quizzing starting at or before 10:00am. The number of round each team quizzes will vary depending on the size of the league.
